Defold, the 2D-focused yet 3D-capable game engine, has recently added support for a new console target — this time, the PlayStation 5.
This announcement was expected since the Defold Foundation outlined their console support plans back in June 2023, coinciding with the introduction of support for the PlayStation 4.
PlayStation 5 is now an additional export target for the Defold game engine, joining an already extensive list of supported platforms. These include Windows, macOS, Linux, Steam, iOS, Android, HTML 5, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4. According to previously disclosed plans, support for the Xbox platform will likely be coming next.
In order to access Defold versions with PlayStation support, users must be registered as licensed PlayStation developers.
Much like the engine itself, the added support for PlayStation 5 is provided free of charge. This combination of a capable free game engine, coupled with the continuous addition of free support for additional release platforms, solidifies Defold as an excellent choice for accessible cross-platform game development.
