Defold is a free, source available game engine for 2D & 3D game development and is marketed as the ultimate game engine for the web and mobile. The Defold foundation recently announced that the engine now officially supports development for the PlayStation 4. The publishing option is available for approved PlayStation developers.

Access to the necessary tools and documentation is provided for free. If required, the full source code is provided through a paid membership tier. This is not necessary in order to release PlayStation games with Defold, though.

Product Owner, Björn Ritzl, expressed the Defold's team enthusiasm for incorporating PS4 support into Defold, describing this as a passion project. The team is thrilled to share the good news with the global community of game developers and eagerly anticipate the opportunity to play their favorite games created with Defold on PlayStation.

With this announcement, the Defold game engine expands its already long list of supported export platforms that includes Windows, macOS, Linux, Steam, iOS, Android, HTML 5 and Nintendo Switch.

Defold is becoming an increasingly attractive choice for developers interested in creating games for video game consoles, with plans to expand its support to additional platforms. The release of PlayStation 5 support is estimated to be in the third quarter of this year, while support for Xbox is anticipated to be available in the first quarter of 2024.
