Odyssey is a new animation software primarily designed for 2D artists who may have limited experience with 3D software. It facilitates the creation and integration of artworks and animations into 3D scenes.
According to Praxinos, the company behind the project, Odyssey combines the benefits of 3D real-time technology with the spontaneity of traditional 2D animation.
Odyssey was developed as a standalone application built on the Unreal Engine, allowing artists to access a diverse set of features. These include lighting, post-process volumes, and the ability to modify the composition of both 2D and 3D scenes — all within a user-friendly and straightforward interface.
Odyssey projects have the same structure as Unreal Engine, making it easy to add assets from the Marketplace or migrate content between projects.
Other notable features of the software include the ability to combine vector and bitmap workflows. Additionally, it offers a storyboarding module that enables the integration of drawings with 3D environments, allowing artists to place cameras and objects anywhere in the scene.
The software comes with several starter templates for tasks such as 2D drawing, storyboarding, 2D animation, 2D animation in a 3D environment, and templates featuring 3D tools.
Odyssey is currently in beta, and a free trial version is available. For now, it is only available on Windows, but the developers are working on a macOS version.
A perpetual license for the software currently costs €1,200 with a 45% discount offer until the end of the year. An annual subscription is expected to be available starting January 2024.
