The well-known developer and asset creator Kenney, recently released a new starter kit for Godot.
This tool facilitates the creation and customization of stylized 3D cities and joins the existing Godot starter kit named 3D Platformer. The latter was designed to streamline the development of 3D platform game projects.
The brand-new kit provides a foundational 3D city builder template that allows users to seamlessly integrate a variety of elements into their projects. These elements include different types of buildings, roads, and trees, enabling users to create playful, cartoony cities and towns with ease.
City Builder works by leveraging Godot's GridMap component which is basically a tilemap for 3D objects. This allows for the placement of meshes interactively on a grid.
Furthermore, Kenney highlighted the impressive performance of the tool, achieving a consistent 60fps frame rate with over one million tiles without any additional optimization efforts. This exceptional performance is attributed to the models using a single material/texture, making them well-suited for expansive maps, even on less powerful hardware.
The starter kit comes with the following features:
- Character controller (with double jump)
- Collectable coins and falling platforms
- Camera controls (rotate, zoom)
- Gamepad support
- Sprites and 3D Models (CC0 licensed)
- Sound effects (CC0 licensed)
City Builder is now available on the Godot Asset Library and on GitHub under the permissive MIT license. The tool was developed using Godot 4.1.1.
