Unity has released a new multiplayer game sample called Megacity Metro. Unveiled at Unite in 2023, this sample project provides valuable insights into creating games that are compatible across various platforms, using Unity Cloud Services, DOTS (Data Oriented Tech Stack), and the Universal Render Pipeline (URP).
Megacity Metro is an an action-packed shooter game built upon the foundation of the original Megacity game sample. It leverages the power of Netcode for Entities to deliver an immersive multiplayer experience.
Designed to accommodate over 128 players across various platforms simultaneously, the project includes advanced features such as prediction, interpolation, and lag compensation. These elements ensure seamless gameplay, even in environments with high latency.
Other key aspects include the capability to achieve large-scale streaming and rendering with the Entity Component System (ECS for Unity) and integration with Unity Gaming Services (UGS) for Game Server Hosting, Matchmaking, and Vivox voice chat.
Megacity Metro serves as a demonstration of Unity's scalability and multiplatform capabilities, offering a blueprint for developers seeking to understand multiplayer game mechanics. It also showcases Unity's latest tools and services for studios to craft immersive, large-scale multiplayer experiences.
Unity will host a webinar on March 27, 2024, presenting Megacity Metro, where you'll be able to learn more about large-scale multiplayer development. Nonetheless, the project is already available for download, enabling you to start experimenting right away.
