Downtown Generator is a Blender add-on that enables the quick creation of city environments through procedural generation. Created by 3D artist Mohamed Elsherif, the add-on can be used for tasks such as creating game environments, open-world scenes, cinematic shots, concept art, and more.
The developer explained that one of the goals behind the add-on was to address particular pain points artists faced when using similar city-building tools. Most either provided fast results with limited output customization or offered a high degree of control that required complex setups, potentially slowing down the user workflow.
Downtown Generator addresses these issues by allowing artists to freely customize layouts and buildings, integrate their own assets, and achieve variation without breaking the system. As a result, users are not limited to American-style cities and can achieve the desired look using their own assets.
With Downtown Generator, users can extrude to create buildings, use loop cuts to split layouts into streets, and control how cities are arranged, including block spacing and overall layout structure. The add-on also provides control over streets, including adjustable widths, sidewalks, and road shoulders. Users can add and control props such as billboards, lights, and other urban details to further customize the look and feel of a city. A night mode is also available for achieving a cinematic look through included lighting and atmosphere.
The recently released version 2 adds a new Lite Mode that provides a lightweight view, helping users focus on city customization for a faster and easier workflow. Version 2 also adds the ability to generate different parts of a city separately, providing greater control and flexibility. Other additions include street mid-islands for the road system and several bug fixes.
The developer has stated that the tool is beginner-friendly, as the add-on is designed to be simple and intuitive. However, a basic understanding of Blender is recommended for the best results.
Downtown Generator V2 is now available on Superhive. The add-on requires Blender version 5.0 or 5.1.
