GDevelop has been updated to version 5.5. This free and open-source "no-code" game engine, initially designed for 2D game development, has been increasingly focusing on expanding its 3D capabilities. In 2023, GDevelop introduced native 3D support, and with this latest update, it now includes 3D physics, making it an even stronger option for creating 3D games.
The new 3D physics functionality in GDevelop is powered by Jolt Physics, a modern, high-performance, battle-tested, and fully featured 3D physics engine used in AAA games, including Horizon: Forbidden West. This new physics functionality supports a wide range of game genres, such as FPS, TPS, and platformers, with plans to add support for racing games and other 3D games in the future.
Physics behaviors can be easily applied to 3D objects, similar to how the 2D physics engine works. Additionally, a specialized "3D Physics Character" behavior is now available for 3D characters.
In addition to the new physics engine, the "Build" and "Manage" tabs on the homepage have been combined into a single, streamlined screen called "Create." The new "Create" tab allows users to access their active projects (both local and cloud-based) and manage their published games.
With this latest release, GDevelop introduces a new premium, chapter-by-chapter course designed to help users learn and master the platform. The course covers everything needed to understand GDevelop and game development through hands-on learning and exploration of the app. It currently includes 15 chapters, with more planned for future release.
The course is available via the "Learn" tab in GDevelop for users with a premium membership. For those without a subscription, the first three chapters are offered for free, and additional chapters can be unlocked individually using credits.
The update also brings several quality-of-life improvements and bug fixes.
